The central theme of these thre videos seemed to be sensibility in design or the deeper purpose of design. I got a real kick out of the first video. I liked his approach and intent to design. I especially liked the societal interaction that the empty thought bubbles created. That video brought to my attention that my hobby of photography is based completely on happiness, as sunsets and natural scenery make me feel happy. Paola's video was equally intriguing, as she makes bold statements the way we interact in society in her design. The last video was hilarious. Phillipe has a very ligth and playful approach to life. Its safe to say that design made by positive, energetic people will exude more happiness and better function.

Stefan Sagmeister - Really cool stuff. I like the idea of "Happy design". I also like that he's a list maker! Very funny power point; I like that he had David Burnes in it! I love the Talking Heads. The most important question that he poses - "Can I do more design work that I enjoy?". Enjoying what you do is everything!

Paola Antonelli - Some of the first words out of her mouth were about religion, and I thought to myself "Oh god...". I despise religion and was automatically turned off, but she really won me over with her brilliant speech. I like that she is an introvert, and obviously very intelligent. I'd like to just place some of her quotes here that I really liked: :"Designers are synthesizers", "The ultimate shelter is your sense of self", Technology comes from war". That last one was an eye opener, but sad.

Phillippe Stark - Funny guy. I appreciate people that can poke fun at themselves, even though I found his ego to be a little swollen. Probably the most eye opening line in his speech was about "cynical designers", because we do so much of that in school. Cynicism is sadly the bases of our critiques. I hope to change this. "God is a trap. God is the answer if you have no answer" ; lovely. Hopefully we can just keep coming up with answers and leave this idea of "god" behind us as a species. Religion is one of the most flawed of all human concepts.

Paola Antonelli’s speech was really refreshing. She spoke about designing for life, as opposed to simply the typical- she mentioned chairs, but I relate “typical” thoughts of designing to layouts, book covers, etc. the very rudimentary form of designing for beginners. However, getting a push in thinking about design in a way other than the ordinary was exciting- much like what was brought up in the previous video, using social issues as inspiration is a real good way to go. This will bring attention to design as well as move along the community in which it is posted or displayed. Also, the designs of toys and objects for disabled children really opened my eyes to my passions and abilities to do things in the real world other than in the “Adobe world”. A lot of times we get so stuck in our schooling that we tend to end our design skills at the computer, but as a seamstress and self proclaimed rather “crafty” person, I need to remember where my abilities actually stretch to. PS: I know this isn’t really the point of Stefan’s speach, but I really want to do the speech bubble thing is super funny, and now I want to do it!!!

I can barely understand Philippe Starck, but from what I do understand, he is quite funny. More encouraging than his bold views is the positive response of the audience.

stefan sagmeister has always been a champion of student/recently graduated designers. i think his brilliance comes from his lack of hesitation in trying the non-sequitur, different, odd, etc. that is exactly the kind of thing we must practice as new designers.

i also loved paola's quote about the ultimate shelter is our sense of self. how great is that observation!

Stefan Sagmeister:
Of course, how could you not say good things about the Sagmeister? I loved listening to him and speak of his "happy design." Very funny to watch, I enjoyed it very much.

Paola Antonelli:
It was very interesting to listen to a curator from the Museum of Modern Art of New York. She was a little difficult to listen to, but good to hear her point of view of art & design.
